The main reason we wanted a puppy was to give Sadie Jane a buddy.

I work from home and Sadie loves to be outside… but she won’t stay for long if I’m not out there, too. Despite having full reign over the fenced yard and lots of time playing ball, it’s never quite enough. So we do this dance where she demands to go out and, within five minutes, insists to come back in. In and out and in and out and in and out, all day.

I’ve left music outside, talk radio… but nothing satisfies her but me.

Enter Walter!

His puppy energy seems to have helped, and now they hang outside together – without me – for hours!

Sadie is happy having a companion; Walter clearly loves romping and playing and learning how to dog from the best; and our entire family adores him and the joy he has brought to our home. Even the cats are coming around!

So why the tears?

Sadie is a personal space kind of dog. She lets him close but not *too* close. And not for long.

But Walter has been workin’ her since he got here and I’ve watched her soften, especially this past week.

They mouth like this throughout the day but this session was the gentlest yet. And when that sleepy boy put his head down to burrow into her – and she let him, even if for a few seconds – my heart melted.

That was a major milestone.

Fingers crossed I’ll be able to share a video of them chillin’ on the floor together very soon. 🤞😎 💕

I had the best time at the @stlouiscountylibrary this week talking with the fantastically brilliant @cat.bohannon about her NYT bestseller "Eve." If you get the chance to hear from Cat directly (whether on book tour or via, say, @nprfreshair ), take it. She will have you thinking, re-thinking, and laughing only as someone who refers to the vagina as a "murder tunnel" can. 👏 Next up in the library's Medical Arts Series, I'll be talking with neuroscientist and grief expert Mary-Frances O'Connor @doctormfoconnor about her latest book "The Grieving Body: How the Stress of Loss Can Be an Opportunity for Healing," the follow up to her "The Grieving Brain" on Monday, April 14.
