What Do You Want On Your Tombstone?

It’s hard not to think of the inevitable with all those spooky ghosts, goblins and skeletons running around today, isn’t’ it? For me, Halloween is a good reminder about living each day in a way — or trying, anyway — that aligns with my deepest intentions. It’s a day that makes me think about things like legacy… memories… the gifts I can leave behind.

My dad passed away almost seven years ago, and few days go by when I don’t have some sort of memory about him. Some make me laugh out loud, others leave me sighing — but they’re all precious.

Have you ever considered the kinds of memories you want others to have about you when you’re gone? Ever thought about the feelings you’d like those flashbacks to evoke?

The answers to those questions are like guideposts to me, helping me decide, to prioritize and to generally know what’s what. And, it’s a little bit of a comfort to me to realize that I have the power to shape those someday perceptions right NOW.

So, here’s some two-minute homework: How do you want to be remembered by those you love the most? When you live on in the memory movie of their minds, which “you” will play the leading role? The who was stressed or the one who was present? The one who talked or the one who listened? The one who took love or the one who gave it? The one who laughed or the one who cried?

With each new day, you get to decide: THIS is who I want to be today.

Write your own story. Create the leading character. Be the hero. For you are NOT stuck.

how will you measure your life
