Last night was such an adventure.
We knew a glimpse of the aurora would be possible here in St. Louis, with the best viewing sometime between midnight and 2 am. Around 9:30 pm, Hubby and I began planning in earnest: Do we go to bed now and set an alarm, or just try to stay up?
I’m the total opposite of a night owl so I voted for the alarm, brushed my teeth and started to take out my contacts when photos started pouring in from family and friends within a 20-mile radius.
Magenta!
Green!
Pink!
When the first shot below arrived from my brother-in-law, we called the kids to the car and raced west toward darker sky. We met the rest of the family in a secluded park about 40 minutes away, hiked to the top of a broad, rocky clearing, and waited.
And waited.
And waited some more.
N-O-T-H-I-N-G.
And while the stargazing was nice, I was so disappointed. I figured this was my once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the Northern Lights. 😩
When my sister-in-law told me to look through my iPhone to see what a long exposure shot might capture, I was skeptical. But, alas, if you look at the second photo, you’ll see the aurora was indeed happening… I just couldn’t see it with my naked eyes. I was looking right at it and had no idea!
I’m confident there’s a good metaphor in there that hasn’t come to mind yet. But it will, that I am sure of.
Skies are supposed to be clear again tonight so we will be hunting auroras once again. In the meantime, I’d love to see your best shots! ... See MoreSee Less
